DOVER – Five second-half three-pointers from Marcus Neal helped Delaware State roll past Mary Washington, 59-43, Tuesday night at Memorial Hall. With the win, the Hornets improved to 3-1 for the first time under coach Greg Jackson, although none of the wins has come against Division I competition. The lone loss was to Maine.
Neal finished with 17 to lead the team. Delaware State succeeded despite shooting just 41.7 percent from the field. Jackson was not overly impressed with his team.
“Well the good thing about it is tonight we were able to get a win,” he said. “But if we play like this in our conference we’ll probably finish in ninth or last place. We played with no intensity, we had no ball movement, and we didn’t exhibit any patience.”
Mary Washington scored just 11 points in the first half. Brandon Altmann led the Eagles with 27 points for the game. UMW outrebounded Delaware State, 31-28.
The Hornets take the floor at Memorial Hall next Tuesday, Dec. 1, against in-state rival Delaware. Game time is 7:30 p.m. After a game Dec. 5 against MEAC foe Maryland Eastern Shore, the Hornets take to the road for their annual road trip from hell. This year, they will play Arkansas, Arizona State, Ohio State and UCLA.
Delaware falls to Siena
ALBANY, N.Y. – In Philly Hoop Group Classic about five hours north of Philly, the Delaware men's basketball team got twisted up like a soft pretzel in a 90-56 loss to Siena College at the Times Union Center. It was the 23rd straight home win for the Saints.
Jawan Carter led the Hens in scoring for the fourth straight game as he went for 13. D.J. Boney added 12 for Delaware, which dropped to 1-3 on the season.
Siena, which received one vote in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls this week, jumped out to a 14-2 lead and never looked back. It was 43-22 at halftime; Siena would stretch the lead to as many as 35 points.
Before traveling to Dover to meet Delaware State next Tuesday, the Hens will go back to the Palestra in Philadelphia for a game against Virginia Tech Saturday at 6:15 p.m.
Wilmington men still seeking first hoops win
NEW CASTLE – The game started in a promising fashion for Wilmington University as the Wildcats opened up a 15-8 lead, but it wouldn't last as Shippensburg rebounded for a 63-53 loss in men's basketball Tuesday night at Pratt Gymnasium.
Wilmington trailed, 35-20, at the half, but the closest they would come the rest of the way was nine. Senior guard Blake Rubenstein led the team with 15 points. Wilmington is now 0-4 on the season; the Wildcats try for win No. 1 Saturday afternoon when the New York Institute of Technology is in New Castle for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
