A lot of hard work and persistence paid off for Dan Geil on Saturday night. The Iowa Park resident held off a solid field at Red River Speedway to take his first ever checkered flag in the Charger class with a victory in the Charger Feature race.
Geil was pushed hard the entire race by Brooks Payne, who won the Charger Heat race earlier in the night. Payne stayed in Geil's rear view mirror, bumping the leader as he tried to find his way underneath. Geil held off the veteran to take the win and 200 points in the standings.
Points leader Cameron Liss finished third in the Charger Feature, while Mike Wright finished fourth. Iowa Park's DeAnn Young, driving Red River Speedway's 00 car, experienced car trouble all night and finished the race sitting in the infield.
Despite this being his first win, Geil is a soild third in the points standings. Geil is just over 100 points behind Payne, who is more than 600 points behind Liss at the top of the field.
The Thunderstock/Super Stock Heat provided the most exciting race of the night. Dale Miller took the early lead with David Dohme challenging and Teddy Shrum a close third. Miller went wide in the first turn of lap 5, allowing both Dohme and Shrum to close the gap as Ted Minor fell out of contention. Miller went wide again in lap 6, this time losing the lead as both Dohme and Shrum moved ahead.
The three way battle would come down to the final turn of the final lap. As Dohme held off Miller, Shrum slipped to the outside and took the victory by a nose.
In the Thunderstock/Super Stock Feature race, the battle was for second place as Miller took an early lead and held on for the victory. Shrum fought to make his way around Dohme the entire race, but the Holliday native couldn't work his way around the No.21 car and settled for third as Dohme took second place in the race and first place points for Thunderstock.
Dustin Cullar picked up where he left off the week before with a victory in the Mod 4 Heat, but points leader Debbie Cullar made sure it wasn't a run away as she challenged the entire race. Debbie took a close second, while Electra's Matt Rose took third and Mike Neff came in fourth.
Dustin's luck would run dry in the Mod 4 Feature as car trouble in lap 4 put him off the track and out of the race. Debbie took a first lap lead and cruised to victory as Rose held off Neff for second. The win increases Debbie's already insurmountable lead over Rose in the points standings.
In the Hornet Heat, Zac Dillard took the lead in the final turn of lap 1 and held on for the win. Starting in the No. 3 position, Ashley Shrum would work her way into a second place finish while Amanda Shrum took third and Tyler Kingcade fell into fourth.
In the Hornet Feature, Dillard jumped into an early lead with Ashley in hot pursuit. Dillard lapped Kingcade's sickly sounding No. 47 car and increased his lead when Ashley had trouble getting around Kingcade and finished a distant second.
Racing returns to Red River Speedway in two weeks with the return of Legends and Bandoleros. All military and first responders will be offered half price admission on September 11.
