NFL Week 5 recap: Belichick loses, former assistants win

Josh McDaniels after Broncos victory over the Patriots.(  AP: C. Schneider)

Billy B's Pats got shut out in the second half of their loss against former assistant Josh McDaniels' Broncos. And then the Broncos' coach almost pulled his shoulder out of its socket with fist pumps that didn't seem to end.

In Buffalo, another former assistant to Belichick, Eric Mangini and his Browns team won its first of the season in a game so ugly, TV analysts criticized it as unwatchable.

With only one game left for Monday night (Jets at the Miami Dolphins) here is a recap of Week 5:

New York Giants beat the Oakland Raiders 44-7: Against the Raiders anyone looks good but not this good. RB Ahmad Bradshaw officially took the stage along with yet another rookie wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks. Eli could rest without fear.

Dallas Cowboys beat the Kansas City Chiefs 26-20: Tony Romo's relief was palpable.after the TD catch by the star of the day, WR Miles Austin. Austin's day included 2 TD's, 250 receiving yds. and an impressive 15 targets.

Indianapolis Colts beat the Tennessee Titans 31-9: A Vince Young sighting late in the game didn't lift Titans' fans spirits as the team went down to its fifth straight defeat without a win. Peyton Manning, like his brother keeps finding new WR's to love.

Seattle Seahawks beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 41-0: Matt Hasselbeck returned and took the Jags to the woodshed. But the defense was more impressive as it shut out Maurice Jones-Drew and David Garrard.

Arizona Cardinals beat the Houston Texans 28-21: Despite fourth quarter heroics by QB Matt Schaub and WR Andre Johnson, the Cards defense held on 4th and goal after a key interception by Rodgers-Cromartie.

Atlanta Falcons beat the San Francisco 49'ers 45-10: When rookie RB Glen Coffee didn't know what down it was, causing Mike Singletary to call a time out to get him out of the field, you knew this wasn't a good day for San Fran. And it wasn't.

Cleveland Browns beat the Buffalo Bills 6-3: Someone had to win it, eventually. Even the Raiders scored 10 points on Sunday, and it was against the G-Men. But when the winning QB only completes 2 passes, what does that say about the losers?

Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Detroit Lions 28-20: QB Ben Roethlisberger had a big day with 3 TD's but the most lasting image was of a scrambling Daunte Culpepper. The guy's still got something in the tank. Who knew?

Minnesota Vikings beat the St. Louis Rams 38-10: Favre might have been right when he said he'd be comfortable in this system. Adrian Peterson runs for only 69 yards but scores twice as Jared Allen makes his mullet look good on a fumble recovery TD.

Philadelphia Eagles beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 33-14: You can't fault rookie head coach Rasheem Morris for not playing it safe on offense. WInless teams should try anything.

Carolina Panthers beat the Washington Redskins 20-17: John Fox's team wins its first game of the season despite a good day for Redskins RB Clinton Portis (2 TD's) and Jason Campbell (104 passer rating). Delhomme only tossed one INT.

Denver Broncos beat the New England Patriots 20-17: Tom Brady took the heat and gave all praise to his former offensive coordinator, now the coach of the Broncos. Is he sending a message or does he really think the Broncos D was better than his offense?

Cincinnati Bengals beat the Baltimore Ravens 17-14: Ravens QB Joe Flacco had his worst day of the season as the Bengals showed their typical 4th quarter come-back prowess. Carson Palmer is starting to return to form.
