Mayweather buys a victory over Marquez and wants it to mean more

Mayweather connected often against Marquez. AP/R. Bowmer

If you want to believe that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has thrown the gauntlet down for the king in waiting, Manny Pacquiao you certainly can.

A masterful, dominating 12-round boxing performance on Saturday night in Las Vegas against Juan Manuel Marquez would be your evidence.

But Mayweather hand-picked his opponent, a man who best fights as a lightweight and threw money, no pun intended, at the problem.

As reported, the fighters agreed on a 144 lb. fight that really wasn't. In fact Mayweather could have weighed more than he did at weigh-in (146) and unless someone from the Nevada Boxing Commission was horrified, the fight could have gone on as expected.

Floyd's penalty was to pay his opponent a hefty six-figure penalty for each pound over the agreed upon weight. The contract was changed after the fact to 147 and both fighters signed off. So don't cry for Marquez, he knew what he was doing. As the ring announcers noted, Mayweather looked comfortable at around 150 which he probably exceeded by fight time. Marquez weighed in at 142 and might have looked a bit soft in the middle.

Marquez was unable to get near his opponent except if he happened to get lucky enough to turn him around and have him backed onto the ropes. That didn't happen often since Floyd made sure to stay near the center of the ring. Tactically the way to go for sure.

Add that to the reach advantage, the small height advantage and of course the weight difference and all you heard from the HBO announcers was the word "big". Mayweather is the bigger fighter, Jim Lampley kept saying. And he clearly was.

The pathetic percentage of blows landed by Marquez was embarrassing. If this had been a tennis match, it would have looked like Roger Federer playing at his peak against a guy who was still on the college tennis team.

But the tactic that ruled the night was the lasting impression of Mayweather's total domination in the minds of fans and those who decide who is the pound-for-pound best.

HBO's Max Kellerman tried to make that point at the post-bout interview in the ring and Mayweather would have none of it. Sounding more like a politician at a town hall meeting about supposed death panels, he wouldn't touch the facts and blamed the media for asking legitimate questions about a fight that truly had no weight limit.

Kellerman might have been out of line by trying to squeeze an admission out of the victor at that moment and it disintegrated to the point where Mayweather had the microphone shut off on him.

But Max got the last word when he claimed that the lasting impression of the beat-down we had just seen was illusory when compared to the weight and size differences between the two fighters.

Fans of Mayweather, he added shouldn't use this victory as a reason to claim that he's a slam-dunk to win against Manny, which in Kellerman's opinion was all Mayweather wanted to do.

I don't get it...he is DAMNED if he DO, DAMNED if he DON'T. You guys will not give this guy any CREDIT (MAYWEATHER). I believe it was a masterful display of TECHINICAL BOXING for the most part for MAYWEATHER. The GUY he beat is the #2 p4P boxer in the WORLD...MAYWEATHER destroyed him. I bet if MANNIE and FLOYD box next year, and FLOYDS beat MANNY convincingly, everyone will say that MANNY is too small and FLOYD is being a BULLY.

Mayweather will not prove anything if he fights Pacquiao because Pacquiao is still considered the best of the small fighters comming from 106. Mayweather needs to fight fighters his own size or bigger like Pacquiao is doing. Paul williams is the true challenge for Floyd. Too late for Mosely . He is almost over the hill. Cotto (if he wins) is a good challenge for Floyd.
Floyd proved that he can beat an OLD BLOATED MIDGET (while floyds cheats on weight). AND THATS A FACT NO MATTER WHAT YOU GAYLOVERS SAY!!!!!

A lot of people had tied Marquez's fame down with Pacquiao's just because they went to war against each other at 130.

Now Pacquiao had stepped up to welter and people are still tying Marquez down to Pacquiao. They seem to be stuck with the perception that if Pacquiao could do it, so could Marquez. But Marquez failed to follow Pacquiao's lead.

Now that Marquez had fallen prey to Mayweather, people are questioning Pacquiao for something that he had no control of. Pacquiao wasn't controlling Marquez back there. Marquez just wasn't able to answer the weight shift puzzle.

I think Pacquiao's about to enter underdog status once more just because Marquez failed to answer his call. Which may not be such a bad thing.. because this could make Pacquiao more hungrier than before.

What is he gonna say....I beat the best lightweight in the world? and not making weight....paying only $600,000 penalty to have a mismatch fight???? catch weight is created so there is equal opportunities for each fighter....Fraud Mayweater and his cronies took all the advantages and ran....poor JMM.

If and whenever Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. will fight each other in the ring ,the contract should have specific claws that if he don't hit the agreed catch weight he should be fine in millions like what they had in ODLH fight wherein he(Oscar) really reach down the agreed weight but overshooted, just to be safe in the penalty. Marquez knows he can't but still took the fight for obvious reason he is getting old and getting rich.On the other hand Mayweather is really a zip lost record fighter ,so he wasn't able to come down to 144 lbs. agreed weight limit.During the actual fight it is pretty obvious that physically and in weight he is in big advantage. An eye popping mismatch and done. With Pacquiao ,if he beat Cotto he should take home the bigger part of the purse because Cotto is a legitimate weltherweight fighter and Marquez was not and never did.

Jeride: It's like you are saying that if the Klitschko's beats Manny, that would also be a "great" performance because Manny is the #1 P4P boxer?

I am not optimistic about a pbf-pacquiao fight. PBF may have a very good boxing skill but he won't face the Pac. He knows the Pac can beat him so he will just make lame excuses like steroids, Bob Arum, he's too small and got no skill, blah blah blah. If the fight should happen, the only way for floyd to beat Manny "convincingly", is to run around like chicken for 12 rounds. And oh, he might ask to fight at 154 so he can trash talk again that Pacman don't want to fight him (at 154 but he will surely omit to say that). Pounds-for-Pounds King? Yeah--- too much excess pounds he..he..he..

The best way Floyd could convince anyone of his legitimacy as a "great" fighter is to answer the public's call for who he should fight next. Ali and Robinson would have. Joe Louis would have too. But he wont, cuz hes a puss, so he'll just relegate himself to fighting only fighters who he knows he has a distinctive advantage over, a la Julio Cesar Chavez JR.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. should go down to boxing history as the best gifted IDIOT that played the game. He has enough reason to proclaim himself the best there is but proves this by preferring to fight inferior fighters and punctuated it by beating a 36 year old boxer 2 weight classes below him; and even had the gall to cheat in doing so.. He clearly has the talent arguably better than current P4P king Manny Pacquiao. If MONEY Floyd badly needed MONEY he could have easily earn triple of what he got with Juan Miguel, at the same time put his hands where his mouth is, if he had the balls to fight and beat a former 106-pond fighter in MANNY. Fact is IF 32-yr old boxer billionaire (in pesos) Pacquiao beats COTTO and earn an unprecedented 7th title in a 7th weight category, there wouldn't be enough reason to fight and glorify a foolish untitled boxer in Floyd Mayweather Jr, specially if Manny decide by then to train his winning ways instesd in Philippine politics.

Paula is perfectly on target. PBF hatched the grand plan as soon as Marquez called him out due to desperation in calling out Pacquiao. PBF wanted to hype his status prior to "possible" negotiation with the Pacman. But read this, the way Pacquiao beat Hatton and if beats Cotto too, PBF is going to make sure the fight with him is not going to happen. Considering all these scenarios, PBF knows Pacman at his skill stage, can beat Marquez worse that he did, and likewise beat his mouth and his father's wide open. Marquez unfortunately was just a willing retiree to PBF's show. Every logical writer knows this based on facts!

Floyd Mayweather jr.'s fight with Marquez lacks the thrills and excitement of a Pacman fight.. It is a boxing exhibition and not a prizefight! He cheated the fans by not honoring the catch-weight provision thus gaining more weight advantage over Marquez.. how could he regain the p4p title when he fought a much smaller guy who went up 2 divisions against him? while in the exact opposite, Pacquiao solidified his p4p king status by going up in weight to fight bigger & stronger men thrice (Diaz/Lightweight, ODLH/Welterweight and Hatton/Light-welter)! And Pacman won 17 rounds in all 3 fights winning them empathically by KO/TKO's! While Floyd jr. needed 12 boring rounds to put away a small opponent..
He could have finished Marquez after the knockdown in rd. 2 but in typical Floyd jr. fashion, he just couldn't take the risk and played it safe for the rest of the one-sided boring fight! Shame on you...

For intelligent boxing fans: Mayweather did not prove anything because:
    1. He was fighting an artificially bloated super featherweight. Did you even see Marquez's stomach? He was fat.
    2. Mayweather came in 2 pounds over the limit. The bigger guy even cheating his way to a far bigger advantage.
    3. Marquez at 36 years old, and significantly shorter than Mayweather is over the hill.
    4. After beating up Marquez for 12 rounds, Marquez face was not messed up except for one tiny cut. Give Pacquiao an opponent to beat up for even just 3 rounds and you'll see cuts, bruises, bumps as big as watermellon. Look at David Diaz and Oscar DLH.
    5. Marquez was overrated. He beat Juan Diaz and Casamayor to become #2 pound for pound. Are any of those guys future hall-of-famers?
    6. Scribes are always talking about Marquez gave Pacman a hard time. That statement is a Fact. However, if you don't acknowledge the fact that Pacman has improved exponentially in the past 3 years, then you are a fool

I agree that Margarito's sin now is very inferior to compare, when mayweather cheated his weight. An hard earn 142 against a comfortably 146, and became 154 on fight night. We understand that Marquez is hungry of the payment and assured pay for him, but what is frustrating are those who were swindled by that fight. Floyd May has a long reach, taller height and the last thing which marquez could have some consolations, which the weight, was still stolen from him. Mayweather should know that fight was an embarrassment. It was an insult to those who buy ticket. And what is very insulting is the fact that weather continue to defend his malfeasance. Very bad, I never know that there are boxer who are swindlers too?

Fact is PBF is a genius; he improvised and perfected the game plan of how to "unfight" in boxing yet win his game. Art of boxing? Yes, maybe. But it makes boxing soo boring this style is a disservice to passionate boxing fans who are willing to spend hard earned money and go out of their way just to see great boxing fights. As a matter of fact I'm inclined to call the kind of game Floyd Jr. has as "cheat boxing". Roger Mayweather talked some sense when he observed that fighters who lost a fight or has losses in their records shouldn't be considered best boxer P4P; but that does not necessarily make him right. Started as a 106-pound professional boxer, Manny Pacquiao fought his way up to be recognized world champion of WBC Lightweight WBC Super Featherweight, IBF Super Bantamweight, WBC Flyweight and held the Ring Magazine titles for Featherweight, Super Featherweight, and Light Welterweight divisions. He suffered losses on the process but the feat certainly qualify as best boxer P4P.

WWE has cross polinated this JMM/Pity Boy match. Meaningless mismatch are created to entertain kids. Great Boxers fight for greater challenges not for money alone. Mayweather truly belongs in the WWE, where the winner is pre-determined. If he wants to be great, he should fight great fighters his own size. He's taking advantage of the great smaller fighters. He shuns from real challenges. He fights in a protected shell.

Now everybody thinks that Gayweather is # 1 after beating an overmatched Crybaby. Crybaby was too slow and has no power at 147 lbs. He can't even touch Gayweather. The weight difference is too much. I knew that this was a mismatch since it started. Pac is a different stoy. Pac will be able to connect and land bombs because he fights from an orthodox boxing stance and throws from different angles. No does not use same combination everytime. Before you make Gayweather # 1 he should fight the big boys Paul Williams, Cotto, Mosley, Margarito or even Pacquiao. My take, it is still a boring fight.
