Floyd Mayweather: king of pay-per-view?

Mayweather's fight against Marquez sold one million pay-per-views

HBO announced the number of pay-per-view ("PPV") buys for the Mayweather/Marquez bout and the news is good for everyone, even Bob Arum.

At least one million purchases were registered by the cable giant and the comparisons to Manny Pacquiao's last two PPV events commenced immediately.

The Associated Press reported the Mayweather/Marquez PPV numbers made it only the fifth non-heavyweight contest to draw more than a million views.

And although Floyd Mayweather is now part of two out of the five, it was widely assumed that in his other million-selling event, Oscar De La Hoya's presence in the ring with Mayweather was the driving force behind an astounding 2.4 million purchases.

HBO's Ross Greenburg told the Associated Press that Mayweather has become a terrific marketer of his own services, citing his "Dancing With the Stars" appearances and endorsement deals.

Prior to HBO's announcement, the spin of the Mayweather/Golden Boy camp was that the final numbers for the PPV would justify Mayweather's insistence on more than a 50-50 split of revenue from a proposed Mayweather/Pacquiao fight.

They were ignoring the in-person gate at the MGM Grand which fell short of the attendance at Pacquiao's fight against Ricky Hatton in May by 20%.

And now, there are reports that Bob Arum, a Mayweather antagonist, is pleased with the 1,000,000 views. Michael Marley, New York Boxing Examiner interviewed Arum and says he's happy that the boxing match outdrew the UFC 103 event that same weekend on PPV. Marley's article can be found, here.

This ramps up pressure on the Pacquiao camp to score big numbers for its upcoming PPV of his bout with Miguel Cotto.

He is the KIng of the most hated fighter in the sport. People watches his fight to see him loose and the other guy to win. He is an arrogant , conceited punk.He proved he can win againts an undersized boxer who is old , slow and a midget. He couldnt even knock him out with all the advantage in the world. He is the most overrated fighter that ever stepped in the ring.

Floyd Is an entertainer. People who don't know anything about boxing, know about Mayweather. Now his fights suck but alot of people like him. They like the way he talks & acts, he's a character. & a lot of people hate his guts & watch his fights hopeing 2 see him get his butt whooped. At the end of day he probably is the ppv king right now but that doesn't make you the boxing king. De La Hoya has been washed up for years & he was still doing better ppv #'s than any1 so 2 me this doesn't really mean much. I bet if you did a poll on all the people that wanted their $ back after they saw that fight, the #'s would be close to 1,000,000 aswell. Lol

You all go watch mayweather fight (dance) for 12 rounds. I rather watch real men fight in MMA. GSP, Brock, Machida, Penn, etc...

Man judging by these comments if this is a reflection of the present fan base of boxing no wonder it's a dying sport. It's official MMA is the real Universal Combat Sport.

People love to hate on greatness. Mayweather is super skilled, the objective is to beat somoneone, but without getting your ass kicked in the process.
If you are 40 and 0, maybe is called confidence, arrogance is when you can't back it up.

what about the bigger dlh, corrales, castillo, baldomir just to name a few? floyd has fought against more bigger oppnents then smaller if you look @ his whole 40 fights. yes, he can be arrogent but the bottomline nobody can match his talent & skill. mosley & cotto are to flat footed & floyd would outthink both of them to a ud. Pacquiao is the only one with a chance because even though floyd is quicker, Pacquiao can match if not surpass him in overall hand speed.(both are so fast we would need to see the fight in slow motion)Pac also has more power and has improved dramatically in 3 big areas that floyd would have exposed easily. pac has much better defense, footwork, head movement, and his right hand hits as hard as his left. roach is the best trainer & with all those variables he is the only one with a chance to beat floyd. i still think floyd wins but pacquiao is a better judah in every way & that southpaw speed & power made floyd adjust. atleast floyd and manny both don't get tired.
