Bill Simmons
ESPN radio played host today to the verbal tussle between the LA Clippers GM and coach, Mike Dunleavy and Bill Simmons, writer for ESPN the Magazine and ESPN.com.
Simmons fired the first shot in a column when he advised Blake Griffin to "Run for your life. Don't turn around, Keep on running" away from the Clippers by refusing to sign with them. He believes the organization is fatally flawed from top to bottom but saved his worst remarks for the team's coach. The column in question is linked, here
When Dunleavy appeared on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd " he expressed his opinion of Simmons. He called him a "joke writer" and nothing more. Simmons came out to Los Angeles as a writer for the "Jimmy Kimmel Show". Cowherd gave the jokester his chance to rebut Dunleavy's opinion of him and Simmons went off, in that special way he has and detailed everything he abhors about Dunleavy. He's a bad coach, a worse general manager and his wardrobe stinks, said Simmons. The link to the podcast of Cowherd's show is, here.
He spoke from personal knowledge of the disdain felt by Clippers players towards their coach and how it manifests during time outs in games. Some of what he knows comes from him being a long-suffering Clippers season ticket holder (believe it or not) and the rest is care of his media credentials.
Simmons then used Twitter to express more thoughts, piling up the facts and the stats to prove that Dunleavy is also a poor excuse for a general manager.
It's easy to take pot shots at the Clippers, Dunleavy and the owner, Donald Sterling. I know because I've done it but the level of venom expressed in the exchange of gunfire between these two is only beginning. Unless, of course, Mr. Sterling wants to do something unusual, like get the team past its sorry record and reputation. In my opinion, that's highly unlikely.
