Serra High's football team rolled into the CIF- Southern Section Northwest Division playoffs by crushing Oak Park, 54-6, in the first round last Friday at Serra in Gardena.

The Cavaliers showed their speed, behind junior wide receiver George Farmer, IV. Farmer scored his three touchdowns in three types. His first gave Serra a 13-0 first quarter lead on a 4-yard run. His second and third were in the second period on a 35-yard punt return and a 56-yard pass from quarterback Conner Preston.

All-American Robert Woods started and finished Serra's scoring. As a defensive back, Woods scored the Cavaliers' first TD on a 33-yard interception return and Serra's final with 8:22 left in the third period as a wide receiver on a 3-yard pass from Preston.

Already leading 13-0 after the first quarter, Serra let loose with five touchdowns against the helpless Eagles, who were badly intimindated forcing them into numerous mistakes. Defensive back Devin Spann got things started with a 10-yard interception return.

After Farmer's second touchdown, Shaquille Richard gave Serra (11-0) a 34-0 lead on a  20-yard run with 3:54 remaining.

Farmer, then, scored on the pass from Preston before Spann scored his second TD of the quarter on a 27-yard pass from Preston with 30 seconds to go before halftime.

Down 54-0, Oak Park (6-5) averted the shutout when on quarterback Brad Taylor's 1-yard run.

Despite the easy win, the Cavaliers did not need much offense and their defense scored two touchdowns while their offense added one more. A few others were on short drives as the Eagles tried to punt the ball away from the speedy Cavaliers.

"Our defense has been great all year," Serra head coach Scott Altenberg said.

Serra may have it a little more difficult as it visits Nipomo in San Luis Obispo County Friday at 7:30 p.m. At Nipomo last Friday, the Titans humiliated Verbum Dei, 39-12. Nipomo finished second in the PAC 7 League.

Mira Costa 42, Quartz Hill 6: Last season, Quartz Hill of Palmdale won the CIF-Southern Section Western Division title with a 14-0 shutout of Manhattan Beach Mira Costa.

This season, however, the Rebels lost a large number of their top players while the Mustangs had nearly their entire team returning.

Among those was speedy senior wide receiver-defensive back Kyle Nunn. Especially in the latter part of the season, Nunn was particularly strong and including last Friday's Western Division first round game against Quartz Hill at Mira Costa.

Nunn caught three passes for 86 yards and three touchdowns and had two interceptions to key the top seeded Mustangs to a 42-6 rout.

Nunn scored on receptions of 16, 50 and 20 yards to lead Mira Costa to a 35-0 halftime bulge.

Demarco also had a 2-yard TD run in the first quarter.

Rico Wright gave the Mustangs a 28-0 second period lead on a 1-yard run and Dion Morris scored Mira Costa's final touchdown on a 20-yard punt return in the third quarter.

The Mustangs will visit Chaminade High, a 37-14 first round winner over host Inglewood last Friday, in the quarterfinals Friday in West Hills.

Dorsey 33, San Pedro 17: Turnovers plagued host San Pedro High's football team in a 33-17 first round loss to Dorsey High in the CIF-Los Angeles City Division I playoffs last Thursday.

The Pirates were leading 17-13 in the third quarter but the Dons came back with three unanswered touchdowns.

Down 27-17 in the fourth period, San Pedro was driving deep to Dorsey territory but running back Christian Farrow fumbled away the ball.

The Dons would go on to score on the drive to put the game away.

Farrow rushed for 165 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries but the turnover proved vital.

Farrow also had a 10-yard scoring reception from quarterback Ronnie Galosic in the first period.

In all, the Pirates committed four turnovers.

Last year, San Pedro was L.A. co-champion with Marine League rival Harbor City Narbonne. The Gauchos advanced to the quarterfinals by shutting out host Jordan, 33-0.
