San Diego State 12, #17 Kentucky 4

Well, the UK baseball team isn't going 70-0 this season, so if you had money on that, I'm sorry. But if you really had money on that, then you're sorry.

The Tony Gwynn-led San Diego State Aztecs are just 4-6 so far this year. However, when junior All-American Addison Reed starts for them, they're 3-1. On Thursday night, Reed pushed his own record to 2-1 and SDSU handed Kentucky its first loss of 2010.

The Aztec All-American went six innings at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego, striking out six Wildcats. Reed was named the top closer in college baseball last season, as he led the country in saves. Due to the loss of, among others, #1 overall pick Steven Strasburg, Reed has now been pushed into starting duties for Gwynn's club.

The story wasn't in San Diego State's pitching, however, as the Aztecs piled up 12 runs against UK hurlers. Starter Alex Meyer (4 1/3 innings, 7 runs, 7 strikeouts, 4 walks) was chased early, allowing runs in four of the five innings he appeared in. Kyle Jackson followed, allowing three runs on three walks, a hit batsmen, and just one hit (a home run). Freshman Walter Wijas threw the last frame for UK, surrendering two runs on as many hits.

Cory Farris led the charge for Kentucky (7-1), as he went 2-3 with a two-RBI double. All-American Chris Bisson went 1-4, extending his hitting streak to a team-high nine games.

The key to the game in my opinion? Well, I'm glad you asked, and it lies in the numbers. Kentucky made ten 'errors' in the game (one defensive error, seven walks, and two hit batsmen), compared to SDSU's two (no errors, two walks, no hit batsmen). The difference (10 minus two)? Eight. And the difference in the score (12 minus four)? Eight. Not that this is the formula for finding winners in baseball, but if you find your team on the losing end of the score, it's probably on the losing end in the boxscore as well.

Kentucky looks to get back on track against a solid University of San Diego club on Friday, handing the ball to junior lefty Logan Darnell. The game will be broadcast online at ukathletics.com and in Lexington on 1580-AM. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. EST.
