While many slept in Saturday morning, several hundred hearty and energetic souls rose early to brave the heat, weeds, hills, smoke, obstacles, hazardous footing and double-trekking through a giant mud pit at the Indianapolis Mudathlon in Anderson at White River Paintball Adventures. A mud-ath-lon is defined as a three to four mile run consisting of multiple pits of mud, challenging obstacles and access to post-race beer. Billed on the Mudathlon website as "the most fun you can have with your clothes on!", it certainly lived up to its claim. For the reader, a Mudatlon can best be described as where traditional European cross-country meets up with the ABC TV show, "Wipeout." If mudpacks on the face are great for your complexions, then there should be some of the most glowing faces around today.
The event consisted of several heats of running taking the course at 15-minute intervals from 7:30 to 10:45 am. Afterward, there was a hose-down by city firefighters, plenty of food and beer (as promised), and stage music by Ribs and Bone.
For those looking for the not-so-typical running race, interested, there is a Chicagoland Mudathlon on July 24th in Valparaiso, Indiana at Graeber family Farms. Visit the Mudathon website and click on Chicagoland Register Now! to enter.
