The Heisman Trophy is not really about the most outstanding player in college football.
It is not about statistics, either. If that was it, UH's Case Keenum would be a lock.
If it simply went to the best player in college football...well, Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh or Tennessee's Eric Berry would get the award.
The Heisman goes to the highest-profile quarterback on one of the most successful teams. It has been that way for six years. It is a lazy way to vote, but that's the reality of it.
By that criteria, Colt McCoy wrapped up the award in Thursday night's 49-39 win over Texas A&M. McCoy threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns, and also ran for 175 yards and a touchdown. The Aggie defense-- like everyone in the Big 12 South except Oklahoma -- is terrible, but McCoy was terrific regardless.
Most voters will give it to McCoy simply because it is his turn, and his main competition for the award, Tim Tebow, has not been as outstanding this season.
And in truth, McCoy deserves it. Texas is very good, but it is hard to imagine them being unbeaten without him. The Heisman is about leadership, winning high profile games and playing for a national championship.
Our vote would still have Keenum first, followed by McCoy, Suh, Alabama's Mark Ingram and Berry.
But based on the way the award is selected and the actual criteria used, McCoy deserves it. In his showcase game, he came up huge.
Texas fans will be able to celebrate a Big 12 title next week. They should also be able to celebrate a McCoy Heisman.
However, A&M did expose some weaknesses in the Texas defense. The Longhorns are vulnerable to a vertical passing attack. Fortunately, neither Alabama nor Florida will be able to take advantage of that.
But that's another story for another day. For now, the Longhorns are gearing up to win the Big 12 title.
And McCoy has likely already pocketed the Heisman.

Spot on!
Colt McCoy should be in the #1 spot on the Heisman polls by the time you read this. His performance against Texas A&M was phenomenal! What a way to end his regular season career. Clearly he deserves Heisman recognition for the year he has had this season. BUT, when you add to that his previous three seasons and the fact that he is the winningest college quarterback in the HISTORY of the game there should be no doubt who deserves the Heisman more.
Please vote for Colt McCoy on Nissan's Heisman website, where YOU and I get a chance to influence the vote.
