The Carolina Phoenix of the Independent Women's Football League (IWFL) defeated the Chattanooga Locomotion on Saturday, June 10 by a 42-14 score and have advanced to the next round of the playoffs.
The Phoenix will travel to Montreal to take on the Montreal Blitz on July 10 with a spot in the Tier II IWFL North American Championship Game on the line.
"Two years ago, Montreal beat us in the semifinals to go to the championship game, so we have a history with them," quarterback and wide receiver Jennifer King said. "If we win, we play in the championship game in Round Rock, Texas. This year, both teams are undefeated and it's going to be a great game."
Carolina finished the regular season undefeated (8-0) and claimed the Southeast Division championship outscoring their opponents 402-36. The Blitz also finished their regular season undefeated (8-0) and won the Northeast Division crown. The winner between the two will be crowned Eastern Conference Champions and will play the Western Conference Champions on July 24.
"Our coach has a quote that says 'Phoenix music is so strong, that you have to dance to it'," King said. "And it's really true. If we do what we can do offensively and defensively, we will be tough to stop."
To help offset the expenses of the trip to Montreal, the Phoenix will be holding a fundraising meet and greet on June 18 and June 25 at Center City Bar and Grille in downtown Greensboro. The night will include karaoke with doors opening at 9:30 p.m. and a percentage of the proceeds that night will go to the Carolina Phoenix football team.
People can also make individual donations to the organization as well by logging onto their support group.
