Cleveland Browns rumor: Shaun Smith sacks Brady Quinn in the locker room?

It was reported last night by play-by-play radio voice of the Cleveland Browns Jim Donovan, also of WKYC-TV Channel 3, that there is a story circulating in the locker room that defensive lineman Shaun Smith hit quarterback Brady Quinn.  It is still unclear if the hit was a sucker punch or with a weight.  Many media sources in town are trying to track down the full story.  The story sounds like more than a rumor since Donovan has now mentioned it.

If the report is true, Smith must go immediately!  This kind of behavior would be coming from a player whose performance on the field is more on and off than most people’s light switches in their bathrooms.  No team’s players, whether superstars or not, and Smith is far from a superstar – for that matter, he’s not in any galaxy with any stars unless you want to count the injury list – can start physically attacking another player, period!

It must be noted that Smith was rumored to be the supposedly unnamed player who quit on the Browns in their loss against the Denver Broncos that Jamal Lewis and Joshua Cribbs were talking about.  Smith has denied that allegation.

This story comes on the heels of yet another Browns loss and totally inept performance by the offense in a 14-0 shutout by the Bengals in Cleveland Browns Stadium before a sparse crowd on an extremely frigid Sunday afternoon.  The shutout brought the Browns home season to a close at 1-7 and improved the stalwart Bengals road record to 1-7.  The Browns haven’t scored an offensive touchdown in 20 quarters, including the last three home games.  That scoreless streak will extend to 24 quarters next Sunday in Pittsburgh.

The lone bright spot was that Lewis gained 76 yards and became the 24th player in NFL history to gain 10,000 yards in his career.  Oh yes, another positive note from yesterday’s game -- Braylon Edwards was having fun again yesterday, running routes and jibber-jabbbering his way to four catches and 35 yards.

This painful season will mercifully come to an end next Sunday in Pittsburgh where the Browns will be shut out again.  Fortunately, the Steelers have nothing to play for next week and will probably pull their starters in the second half, if not earlier, depending how bad the beating is in the first half.  That might give Lewis a chance to rush for 92 yards next Sunday to reach the 1,000-yard mark for the second consecutive year.

Following next week’s loss, major changes will be coming to the Browns.  Chiefly among those will be the firing of Romeo Crennel, if not general manager Phil Savage as well.

But if the rumor about Shaun Smith physically attacking Quinn is true, then Savage needs to make one more personnel move before he departs.  Give Smith his walking papers and make sure the back door hits him in the rear end on his way out of Cleveland.

I don’t know how far Smith will get, though.  Using his play on the field as a guide, I would say his range of movement is about the width of the football.

Quinn is one of the most obnoxious personalities in sports.

He should be in for a lot of slapping around.

He probably caught Quinn trying to sneak a peek at his junk.

firefligh, how would you know? How often does he make appearances?? Do you know him personally?? You sound like you need slapped around. And Marty - I bet you wish anyone, just anyone would try and sneak a peek at your junk. Don't hate, appreciate. You'll never be like Brady or have as much money as him so you need to hate on him. Well Even if he was gay (he's not) he would be about 10,000,000,000 times better of a man than you are.

Just wanted to throw this out there- what if Quinn socked Fatboy Smith in the face... Is the following statement still carrying weight?

If the report is true, Smith must go immediately.

No team’s players, whether superstars or not.... can start physically attacking another player, period!

Does Brady have to go if things shake out differently? DA in 2009?

Amber - I have nothing against Quinn, but would you be defending him if he were not a "pretty boy"? Also, you ask the others about the accuracy of their statements, but you say that Quinn is not gay and that he's 10 billion times the man of Marty. How do YOU know? Unless you have known Mr. Quinn in a "Biblical sense", he could very well be packing pie in his back pocket and Marty may be a REAL MAN... :-)

    i'm so happy

i want to promote smith. that's what quin gets. if he is going to walk around the weight room like he is the messiah, someone is inevitably going to remind him that he took 24 snaps in the nfl before he hurt his pinky.

if i was in the lockerroom w/that spoiled baby i would hit him too. NOT only is he over estimated he already shows that fear of the defense that plagues all cleveland QB's. His manurverability in the backfield is poor and his quick decision making is almost non-existant.He is going to turn out to be a wash-up in cleveland get traded and make the browns look like fools when we play against him.(CLEVELAND CURSE)!GOOD JOB SMITH!!!hit him again for me before you leave!thanx!!!
