The Buffalo Sabres announced that Olympic bobsled gold medalist and Buffalo native Steve Mesler will drop the puck at a ceremonial face-off prior to this Wednesday’s home game against the Dallas Stars. Game time is 7 p.m. Mesler won gold for the U.S. team in the four-man event at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Additionally, the Sabres announced that the sixth annual Scotty Bowman Showcase will take place on Monday, March 29, at HSBC Arena. The event consists of two all-star hockey games between high school players from Buffalo and Rochester. The event will also feature a 20-minute Girls Showcase between games, featuring the top local high school players from Buffalo-area club teams. Admission is $5.

The first game will be at 6 p.m. with juniors from each city facing off against one another, followed by a senior game at 8:30 p.m. The winner of the senior game will be awarded the Scotty Bowman Cup.

This year’s event will once again feature Music is Art’s “High School Battle of The Bands,” featuring some of the best musical talent that Western New York has to offer.

Not to be outdone, the Buffalo Bisons announced that New York Mets great Dwight Gooden will appear at Coca-Cola Field on Wednesday, Aug. 25, as the Herd host the Pawtucket Red Sox at 7:05 p.m. Prior to the game, the Bisons are giving out Gooden bobble head dolls to the first 4,000 fans through the Swan Street gate. My advice: Get there early. The line for Darryl Strawberry last year formed early and ran pretty much the length of the stadium.
