Mets keeping Oberkfell in Buffalo, plus news from Rochester and Niagara

The New York Mets announced that Ken Oberkfell will return as manager of the Buffalo Bisons for the 2010 season. Pitching coach Ricky Bones will also remain a part of the Herd’s staff while Jack Voigt has been promoted from the Brooklyn Cyclones (A) to take over as the team’s new hitting coach. Athletic trainer Brian Chicklo and strength and conditioning coach Ken Coward will return for their second seasons with the Bisons. Buffalo opens up its 125th season on Thursday, April 8, in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Additionally, the Mets have hired former Bisons manager Terry Collins as their minor league field coordinator. Collins was manager of the Bisons from 1989-1991 and had a 246-186 record. His .569 winning percentage is the eighth highest in the 124-year history of the team. Collins was inducted into the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992.
