Maryland Terrapins recruit Terrence Ross has withdrawn his verbal committment and is once again looking for a school to call home next season.
He has reopened his recruitment to four schools, one of which is Maryland. That said, it seems highly unlikely that Ross will be in College Park next fall when you consider that Duke, Kentucky and Kansas are now all in the running.
This is by far the biggest recruiting blow for Maryland yet. Gary Williams and his staff had somewhat recommitted themselves to recruiting players as hard as they possibly could, and signs of a turnaround were beginning to show. Next year's recruiting class was going to be Top 20 thanks to Ross, but if he should go elsewhere, forget the national ranking.
Things like this do happen in the recruiting world, but rarely to the top dogs of college basketball. It can be argued that Maryland is nowhere near that group right now, but they should be. Considering the immense high school basketball talent in the state of Maryland, the school should be ranked in the top 10 year in and year out and compete for national championships.
It's been quite awhile now since the Terps were on that level, and that has to change. It seemed like change was on its way, but a big part of that now looks to be heading elsewhere.
Note: Former Maryland guard Steve Blake has been hospitalized with pneumonia. Let's hope he has a speedy recovery and that he will be back on the court for the Portland Trailblazers in the near future.
