Mason likely to return in 2010

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason will likely return in 2010 so long as he and the team can reach an agreement on a contract.

Mason, an unrestricted free agent, said after the team's playoff loss that he was unsure whether or not he would return next season.

The wideout abruptly announced he was retiring last offseason only to change his mind a few months later. He admitted to being shook up by the murder of good friend and former teammate Steve McNair, but others felt it was a ploy to force the Ravens into giving him more money.

Mason, who has come so close to winning a Super Bowl, likely can't bear the thought of walking away and knowing that he could end up missing out on a chance to get that coveted ring.

He certainly has enough still left in the tank, though he would probably function best as the No. 2 wide receiver. If the Ravens could bring in someone like Brandon Marshall, Mason could really go to work under less scrutiny by opposing defenses.

The Ravens believe that the wide receiver class in this year's NFL Draft is very deep and seem to think they can find a player they would like in each round. I'd look for the Ravens to draft at least one wideout, possibly two, depending upon exactly how things transpire.

Nonetheless, getting Mason back will certainly ease the minds of fans and front office personnel after he was their only legitimate weapon in 2009.
