Trade winds blowing through Braves outfield

Frustrated Franceour has suitor.

Once upon a time, there was a cheesy but delightfully melodic pop band called The Outfield. Brits, oddly enough, but many songs and album titles reflected a sport foreign to their homeland.

They were productive and in-tune, which is more than can be said for the Atlanta Braves' outfield. If any grass-roaming groups in the big leagues have accomplished less, let them stand up. Better yet, run and hide.

The topic has bubbled up with reports that the Boston Red Sox, whose outfield is needy because of injuries and David Ortiz' decline, has scouted Jeff Franceour as a possible trade target. Frenchy started hot but has retreated to a .247 average.

Garrett Anderson is going in reverse, up to .266 after a dreadful start. Injuries, however, have limited him to 84 at-bats. He time-shares left field with Matt Diaz, batting .288 but not looked at as a full-timer.

Then there is, God bless him, Jordan Schafer, whose stellar spring training induced the Braves to drop Josh Anderson. (Ouch.) Schafer is hitting .205, and his 59 strikeouts (in only 156 at-bats) ranks second in the league.

Kissing off Frenchy to the Red Sox won't solve anything, other than to free up dollars to acquire a reliable outfielder.

We leave you with this stat: The four whiffle-bat outfielders have combined for seven home runs.

Not even The Outfield can make that sound good.
