Georgia Tech fans doubly delirious, UGA's doubly depressed

Nesbitt's on a roll/AP

The happiness level for Georgia Tech and Georgia football fans hinges on two factors:

--How good their team is doing;

--How bad the other team is doing.

Techsters are so high this week that their co-workers wonder if they should be drug-tested. Dawgs are so low this week that loved ones are making sure they are avoiding bridges, cliffs and the rooftops of tall buildings.

The yawning gap could close Saturday.

Virginia Tech, the nation's highest-ranked one-loss team, returns to Atlanta, up the street from its season-opening loss to Alabama in the Georgia Dome. The Hokies have an on-fire offense and a nasty defense to complement their vaunted special teams.

The Yellow Jackets can thrown down a potent offense of its own, with Josh Nesbitt at the controls, but their young, ailing defense is in for a night longer than the 4 1/2-hour marathon in Tallahassee if it doesn't buck up.

For Georgia, Vanderbilt presents as close to a gimme as possible in the SEC. The Commodores have backslid from recent bowl-quality seasons, mainly because of an offense that needs GPS to find the end zone.

But nothing will come easy for UGA, among the nation's leaders in unenviable categories: penalties, turnovers, yards allowed . . . (stop me if you've heard enough). Playing out of the spotlight in Nashville will benefit the Bulldogs, whose most loyal followers historically occupy half of the seats at Vandy. It's an ideal get-well situation.
