Blow off valves are those things you hear on turbo cars that make the "woosh" sound after giving it throttle. Vroom, psst. The "psst" is the release of unused pressure that builds up between the turbo and throttle body. When the throttle body closes, that extra pressure generated by the turbo between turbo and throttle body has nowhere to go! The blow off valve allows this extra gas to escape instead of counter acting the turbo by slowing down the impellers with reverse pressure.
There is two types of blow off valves. One type of BOV releases pressure out of the intake system into the atmosphere, known as atmospheric. The other type releases the pressure back into the intake, known as internal. These two types of blow off valves both release extra air pressure in the intake, but the atmospheric one is the loudest. BOV's are fun by them selves, but of course this extra pressure allows for fun! Check out the following videos of blow off valve fun and see how creative people can be with pressurized air.
