Crawford Performance wins 2009 season opener

Crawford Performance pulls another win for the season opener of 2009 Redline Time Attack series. Buttonwillow Raceway hosted the #13 configuration for this particular event. Subaru skunkworks, Crawford Performance, and ‘Tarzan’ Yamada is a winning combination even if the front axles lose power.

There is more to this race than just a standard win. The Crawford Performance vehicle blew out the front drive wheels. No power was going to the front axle resulting in really bad over steer. A quick trip into the pits and reprogramming of the differential allowed the vehicle to continue racing.

The STi has a very considerable amount of power. 600 ft-lb's of toque in sixth gear at 6500 rpm's needs somewhere to go; two tires cannot maintain grip. The car started to lose traction at very high speeds and was less stable through corners. The beauty of all wheel drive is the ability to pull out of a corner slide, instead of push out like rear wheel drive.  A rear wheel drive vehicle in an all wheel drive competition is stacking the odds pretty deep. It is truly amazing that Crawford Performance won this event considering they still have more powerful engines, and were only using RWD on a very curvy track.
