Meryl Streep and Cameron Diaz Arrive To The Oscars In...

The Oscars are here and everyone is watching the stars to see what they are clad in when they arrive at the red carpet.  Meryl Streep arrived in a smart, silver...  you guessed it,  Toyota Prius Hybrid!

Streep was first nominated for an Oscar in 1979 for "Kramer vs Kramer" on her way to a record 15 career nominations!  She is certainly a Hollywood Mega-Star who could have arrived in just about anything that she desired.  It's very cool that she chose the eco-friendly Toyota Prius from amongst all of the other options.  The greatest part about it is that the Prius is actually hers!

Ever since the Seinfeld creator's hilarious "The Larry David Show" made much adieu about politically proper Prius, many Hollywood stars have been embracing the fad.  Cameron Diaz is also a very famous Toyota Prius owner!

Now ordinarily I have not been overly ecstatic about the Toyota Prius, but having driven one regularly, they are actually great cars.  I'm not crazy about the standard trim packages, but when you add the leather seats, navigation, and rear back-up camera, the Prius really is a well-equipped and very useable, comfortable car with lots of room for passengers and their luggage all in a 50 mpg package.

Of course Meryl Streep's Prius had the lovely black leather seats, and I'm sure it probably had all of the other options as well.  Many stars add special options to suit their tastes, and hey why not!  I mean if you are uber-famous, but still want to be environmentally conscious, you may as well get some nice tinted windows put in so the papparazzi can't disturb you while you're tooling around Rodeo Drive.

The back-up camera in the Prius is probably less about utilizing modern technology, and more in response to buyers complaints about the strange tinted hatch on the popular Toyota hybrid.  It's really pretty funny and a bit sad that Honda designed the new Insight to look exactly like the Toyota Prius, but of course they used nice, clear glass on the rear hatch.  I think Honda really sold out by so bluntly copying the Prius.  The original Insight was a very avant-garde, and beautifully designed car.  They should've converted that to a four seater and pushed the envelope of hybrid styling a bit!

While there are more exciting hybrids out there like the forthcoming Fisker Karma, I think Meryl Streep (and Larry David) made a great choice for their "limousines".  It sets a great example for other less seasoned stars and the general public.  It really doesn't matter how much money or how many Oscar nominations you might have, we can all do something for the environment just by driving a great Hybrid like the Toyota Prius.

Hi- I watched the Oscars but I missed seeing the stars arrive. Thanks for keeping us informed. I drive a Prius and it does not have the xtras that you feel are creature comfort must haves - the navigation monitor. I am a woman driver who does just fine in reverse mode. I do like to hug the curb when I park but I do not feel the monitor is a must have. Thanks for not leaving the hybrids out of your great articles.
