The 1962 / 63 Ferrari 250 GTO's are one of most coveted cars for automobile collectors. The combination of the Ferrari V12, the flowing Scaglietti penned lines and lots of racing success came together to create what is widely regarded as the most collectible Ferraris of all time. Only 35 of the series one cars were produced.
RM Auctions has recently announced that chassis number 4675 GT will be offered for private treaty sale. The 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO won many races in the mid 60's and has an extensive racing history.
A private treaty sale is used by sellers and negotiators to seek out as many true, ready willing and able buyers as possible around the world, and then through a period of time, to obtain the best and final offer. In other words, it could be months before we hear anything definitive about the sale.
The Ferrari GTO can be found amongst the most discerning and wealthy car collectors collections. Pink Floyd's drummer Nick Mason is one such owner, and I'm sure unlike other GTO owners, he actually drives his regularly.
In 2008 a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO being sold by a Japanese businessman was reportedly bought by an Englishman for 15.7 million pounds. That's about $24.5 million dollars!
So I guess you are wondering if the '63 GTO will become a world record breaker. The real answer in my opinion is that this 1963 Ferrari GTO may very well break the record for the most money ever paid for an automobile, but only until the next 1962 250 GTO hits the auction block.
I believe the 1962 250 GTO just has a more appealing and flowing shape towards the back of the car. I will keep you posted on the results of the private treaty sale. Perhaps 2010 will be another year of record breaking auctions.
