San Francisco 49ers step into a real mess

In the middle of NFL free agency, and just weeks before the NFL draft it appears that San Francisco 49ers and the General Manager, Scot McCloughan have parted ways.

Since the 49ers have greatly improved under the watch of McCloughan we have to assume the reasons for this are noon football related. Since this is not a gossip rag, we will not venture a guess as to what he may have done, but look at what this means for the Niners moving forward.

It seems that Niners head coach Mike Singletary will gain the most power within the organization due to this move. That good be a very good thing, Samurai Mike has done a great job on the sidelines for this team, and he may have enough football knowledge to help the team find talented football players.

However, the timing of this is troublesome. The Niners have not been very active in the free agent market, but with an 8-8 record in 2009 they didn’t really have to be. With that being said the moves they have made seem to solid ones.

The signed David Carr as the backup to QB Alex Smith, they then traded backup QB Shaun Hill, who they didn’t need anymore, to the Detroit Lions for an extra 2011 draft pick. They addressed their CB need with the signing of Karl Paymah. All good moves. This seems to further suggest that the Niners and McCloughan parted ways for other reasons, since his performance has been solid.

This is a risky move for the Niners since they have two first round draft picks, and are sitting in a perfect position to address their needs, and make a serious run at the NFL playoffs in 2010.

With McCloughan in place, and Singletary on the sidelines it looked like the Niners were on the right path, after years of bumbling they were making solid moves, and improving each year. For a NFL organization what else could you ask for?

While we don’t know why he has left, we have to wonder how this will affect the organization as a whole. Only time will tell on that one, and hopefully at some point we find out what Scot did to ruin a really great situation.

I'm not convinced the reasons for Scot's departure are not "football related". Sources, likely from inside 49ers headquarters, say the reasons are "personal matters". Too many egos (York,York,Marathe,Singletary) to satisfy McCloughan. He is the one that should be running the organization, but I'm reasonably certain he takes a back seat to the egos.

scot is leaving because he has three young children right now and he is going threw a divorce. he left to try and save his marriage and keep his family together. to qoute scott he said"iv lost sight of whats really important, my family" he will return back to the nfl in a couple years but this isnt football related cause he was a great gm and he had great relationships with the york family and all the people he worked with. york is a young owner but is on the right track and i think he is a good owner and wiill end up becoming a great one. go niners

ttb is right...it was verifed that his wife filed for divorce. As GM, he had neglected his family even though it is assumed it comes with the territory. He was honest in his interviews with no ill-will towards the niners and the niners are repsecting his privacy by staying silent. No dirt,no drama...it is what it is. If he is distracted with family turmoil he is not doing his job as gm which requires 100% of his effort and attention especially now, draft time. If his wife is divorcing him, even though its bad timing for the team, the niners are secondary when it comes to family. This story makes common sense unlike all the crap and conjecture stories out there trying to make mounatins out of mole hills.
