Should the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings share a downtown arena? This story is a little complicated, and we have to look at a whole lot of factors. 2009-10 NHL preview: Detroit Red Wings The Detroit Red Wings have been one of the finest sports organizations in any sport over the past twenty years. It is really too bad that the NHL salary cap finally caught up to them. In previous years Wings’ owner Mike Illitch would have cut check to Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelson, Jiri Hudler, and Tomas Kopecky. However this year he could not, and the Wings had to let all four players go. After signing both Henrick Zetterberg and Johan Franzen to very cap friendly long term deal the Wings just didn’t have enough cap space to make a big splash on the free agent market. |

Detroit Red Wings sign Bertuzzi For the second time in his career Todd Bertuzzi is a Detroit Red Wing. Since the Red Wings have a policy against releasing details of contracts to the press, the amount of the one year deal is as of yet undisclosed. Bertuzzi will add some much needed grit and nastiness to a Red Wings roster that has lacked both in recent seasons. |

Wings Sign Franzen to 11 year deal Long term deal are very much in vogue in the NHL, since a player’s salary cap number is determined by the average amount of salary over the length of the new contract. No one understands this better then Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland who earlier this year locked up another one of his stars, Henrik Zetterberg, to a similar 12 year deal. |
