Despite a difficult first set, Maria Sharapova recovered in order to beat Jarmila Groth in their first round match at the 2010 U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, New York on Tuesday.
Sharapova dropped the first set, but stormed back to advance, 4-6 6-3 6-1. The 60th ranked Groth proved difficult, but in the end it was the more experienced Sharapova who earned the victory.
Following the match, Sharapova explained her early struggles to reporters, saying, "I think she came out today and really swung and didn't give me much time to do anything out there. Against a player like that, who kind of plays the one-two punch type of tennis, it's quite difficult to get a rhythm in the beginning."
Maria Sharapova's next match will be against Iveta Benesova.
