St. Patrick's day and Celtic Christianity

St. Patrick's Cathedral Celtic cross, source: wikimedia commonsAre you celebrating St. Patrick's Day today?  For many of us the day evokes thoughts of wearing green, lucky leprechauns, and drinking a pint.  For a brief historical look at St. Patrick check out the Charlotte Episcopal Examiner's article, The Feast of Saint Patrick.  Kathleen Deignan of the Huffington Post gives us another perspective on St. Patrick in her article,  St. Patrick, One of Christianity's Earliest Liberation Theologians.

Looking at Irish culture from a spiritual perspective, Celtic Christianity gives us a wonderful reminder to find the Sacred in our every day lives.  Making a practice of being mindful of the present moment can have a positive impact on health and well being.  If you only have a moment today, take advantage of this coffee break provided by The Anchorage, A Contemplative Ministry in Greenville.  If you have additional time and would like to celebrate the day with an evening worship service, St. James Episcopal Church of Greenville is offering a Celtic Evening Eucharist  service tonight at 6:30 p.m.

If you are interested in exploring Celtic Christianity, check out Professor Dennis Doyle of Glendale Community College in Southern California's Celtic Spirituality page.  Monastic life provided the center and daily rhythm in this culture.  To look at modern versions of monastic life that are connected to Celtic Christian heritage, check out the Northumbria Community and the Iona Community.  A few local glimpses into monastic life include Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner and the Monastery of St. Claire in Travelers Rest.
