Andy was born in Marshall, Texas, and traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1958 when his father, a Baptist minister, was called.  He spent his youngest years in Tulsa before traveling to California with his mother, where he stayed until 1971.  He attended a Catholic high school, and joined the Tulsa Police Department in 1978.  Andy graduated from Northeastern State University (B.A. in speech), Oklahoma University (M.A. in human relations), and Phillips Seminary (M.A. in theology) during and after his retirement in 2003.
