What is Project of Heart?
Project of Heart is not a regular artistic endeavor. P.O.H. commemorates and honors the memories of the many Indigenous children who died in residential schools in Canada, while also paying tribute to their families and communities. By bringing awareness about this nefarious system and its direct consequences on generations of human beings, the project invites Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life to come together and address issues that will help pave the way for a better tomorrow.
How does Project of Heart work?
Project of Heart accepts any group interested in participating. It can be a school (staff and students), as well as worship, youth and activist groups.
First, participants must purchase a Project of Heart kit. This kit includes a certain number of wooden tiles. Each tile represents the loss of an Aboriginal child’s life due to the residential school system.
Then, participants are encouraged to learn more about residential schools; they choose a school and decorate all the tiles in the kit.
When the decorating process is over, the group must research an issue of relevance to the Indigenous community. Participants are prompted to address that particular issue, especially during their meeting with an Elder and / or residential school survivor.
