Every once in a while we feel the need to get away, to escape the concerns of the day, to let go of what holds us down and breathe in all there is to know. Sometimes it can be physical, emotional or spiritual issues that are screaming for release and for me, nothing says freedom like a road trip. So to that end we'll be embarking on several different metaphysical field trips around the state.
Arizona is a hub-bub of spirituality. It is a magnet for the metaphysical. Seekers from around the globe are drawn to this desert mecca and surrounding area. A variety of experiences and lessons can be found along the way on any given spiritual road trip.
Today we'll be traveling north on I-17 to visit Sedona, universally known for it's spiritual vortexes and metaphysical activities. A vortex is a place of deep energy spiraling outward and upward, attracting those of like chemistry. Bell Rock is probably the most popular, since it is the first one you reach on the way into red rock country on SR 179. If you hike the trail to the top you will see a Native American medicine wheel on the way. It is a circular rock formation used for a variety of ceremonies, celebrations and rituals. Try to go on a weekday to avoid the crowds and be better able to listen as the ancient rocks speak to you.

A little further down SR179 and on the opposite side of the road is a marvelous trail, leading up to a quiet area, free of traffic where you can clear your mind and spirit by listening to the sounds of nature. Feel your own breathing and beating of your heart and let go the worries that bind you. Forget the finances, the family and especially the job, or whatever is most pressing at the moment. Set it free as you yourself are set free. Embrace the joy of release and taste the freedom of spirit.
A not-to-missed spot on this spiritual road trip is the Chapel of the Holy
Cross. Built among the red rocks this cathedral overlooks the dotted landscape below. Cavernous and quiet, millions of travelers make the pilgrimage up the steep slope and around breath-taking views. You can light a candle, say a prayer, or walk right to the edge of the floor to ceiling windows and gaze down on the vast beauty Serene seems to accurately describe the atmosphere. Hushed voices mix with children's laughter, rise and echo with the spirits, both here and elsewhere.
Stop and take a refreshing perspective before continuing on around the bend to the more popular, commercial travel spots. We'll explore some of those places on another metaphysical road trip.
