According to the UK’s Telegraph, executives from Facebook, YouTube, Google, and Wikipedia will be attending a specialized conference organized by none other than one of the world’s most powerful institutions: the Vatican. Bishops from varying European locales will begin gathering on Thursday November 12 to learn about social media and networking on the web. Vatican representatives will be in attendance in an effort to learn the latest methods of staying plugged in to today’s technologically advanced audience.
Observers are speculating this educational conference is in actuality an attempt to more closely monitor and control the development and spread of the church’s persona and overall message; but after Pope Benedict XVI’s comment about condoms and the tornado of turmoil that quickly followed, who could blame them?
Image control at its most ecclesiastical, many are eager to see the Vatican’s next step as well as the extent to which they will engage in popular social media platforms. Will the Pope be tweeting about his daily activities? Will he be the newest member of Facebook’s Mafia Wars? Only time will tell.
