Author Brian James Freeman has a new book, The Painted Darkness, set for release by Cemetery Dance in November, but he's not going to make you wait that long to read it.
In an unusual marketing move, Freeman and Cemetery Dance are offering The Painted Darkness as both a downloadable e-book and in streaming audio - for free. Pre-order of the book is not required, and there are no strings attached.
The Painted Darkness is the story of Henry, an artist who witnessed something horrible in the woods behind his childhood home. Ever since, Henry has used his talent as a painter to work through his terror while simultaneously buildng a successful career and a happy home life. But he senses something isn't quite right about the old farmhouse he and his family call home, and he soon learns that the things he thought he left behind have been following him his entire life.
CD will publish Freeman's novel in a trade hardcover edtion ($19.99), a slipcased hardcover limited edition of 750 signed (by both Freeman and author Brian Keene, who supplies an introduction) copies ($75), and a traycased hardcover lettered edition of 26 copies signed by Freeman, Keene and artist Jill Bauman ($175). The limited edition sold out within 24 hours of the book's announcement, but copies of the other two editions are still available for preorder.
The e-book, which is formatted to fit Kindles, Nooks, and devices from Sony and Apple, will not include the Keene introduction or the Bauman illustrations, but it will have a few features not available in the print editions, including interviews with Ray Bradbury and Freeman, and a special author's afterword where Freeman discusses his decision to give the book away before publication. There will also be a $5 coupon good toward the trade edition of the book for a limited time.
Check in later this week, where I'll have an exclusive interview with Freeman about The Painted Darkness.
