How many times have you wished your space was better organized so that it could be more useful to you? The way we live our lives can be affected greatly by the clutter around - or the system which helps us avoid living like that. Enter Elaine Terner, a mother of three young men, the youngest of whom is autistic. She knows that people with various special needs can benefit greatly from having their homes reorganized. Elaine draws from her own personal experience, which includes the challenge of trying keep her home neat and tidy with three busy boys working against her efforts. Exceptional Designs will evaluate your situation individually and develop a plan that is as unique as you are. With the goal of making each home's environment more compatible for the entire family Elaine is also committed to helping parents avoid the expenses associated with endless preventable repairs. Exceptional Designs has a primary focus of improving the lives of people with special needs by creating the ideal, safe home environment for each of them.

"The underlying purpose of all of my work is to create an environment, beginning in the child's own room, which will give him the feeling of a 'safe haven' away from the world. Inside that room are colors to calm, features minimizing the chance of injury such as specialized furniture design and sensory accessories to attact their attention to cause awareness and interaction with that object." Elaine says, "This interaction and involvement promotes the desire to interact with other objects and eventually other people. An example of this was my son Ari watching martial arts movies which moved him to imitate the sounds and the movements of the people. It caused further language development by listening to all sounds and being aware of what was going on around him."

Before:
Take a look at this closet. It doesn't take a genius to realize that this space is not very user-friendly, and not far from becoming a hazard. Note the bowing of the shelves as they strain under the weight of all those clothes... and how hard it must be to actually locate what it is you need from within this jumble of possessions!

Elaine comes in and evaluates the problem area, interviewing each client regarding what their needs are and what they hope to achieve through her services. Then she drafts a plan of action and gets to work with the client as well as any contractors required to complete each portion of a given project.

After:
In the after photo you can clearly see the difference. Although still quite loaded with items, this closet is much more functional and the owner can easily find and remove something without everything else falling down along with it. How did Elaine do it?

A new closet was constructed and installed on to the existing closet's wall on one side and in the back. The space is too narrow to have side-by-side hanging areas. The components consist of a wooden frame covered with mica. There are shelving units with adjustable shelves for any arrangement desired, built in chests of drawers and strong metal hanging poles. Now there is a place for everything in which all items can be seen and the entire closet is organized with space to move around. If the client decides to relocate in the future, the entire closet's components can be removed and reinstalled in the new home.
