We are very lucky to have so many wonderful resources for parents with Special Needs' kids right here in our own backyard. Check out the following websites for resources and information available to you right here in Westchester.
The Westchester ARC organization is a family-focused agency offering opportunities to individuals with disabilities such as autistic spectrum disorders, Down Syndrome, mental retardation, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities. The agency supports social inclusion for people with disabilities because of its benefits to the entire community. You can get more information about Westchester ARC at http://www.westchesterarc.org.
The Hudson Valley Special Education Parent Center at the Westchester Institute for Human Development offers information and resources about the special education process to parents of children with disabilities. Their on-line newsletter is chock full of parent information, educator resources, workshops and programs and links to state education departments. Make sure to check out their current workshop catalog offering programs and workshops throughout the lower Hudson Valley. For more information go to www.hvsepc.org.
Lastly, the website SEPTA 914 (http://www.SEPTA914.com), contains regional information on Westchester and Putnam Special Education PTAs. This month's newsletter features information on a film screening in Valhalla, a Westchester/Putnam transition consortium held at Westchester Disabled on the Move and a Transition Fair for middle and high school special education students and their families at Northern Westchester Boces in Yorktown.
You can also find more information about these and other sights in Westchester county at my website, www.orderoochaos.com.
