Toys for children with autism

Latches Board

Recently Toys R Us put together a list of the top 10 toys for Autism in collaboration with the National Leotek Center and the Autism Speaks organization. Together these organizations have picked 10 toys that are both appropriate and beneficial for children with autism. Four particularly good recommendations are discussed below. Other toys for children with autism can be found at the Toys R' Us website.

The Locks & Latches board by the Melissa & Doug Company is one of the recommended toys. These boards may help children with autism learn life skills such as how to use household latches and locks. Also, manipulating the boards require hand-eye-coordination and fine motor skills.

The KidZoom Camera is another great choice for a child with autism. The camera can allow the student to take pictures of favorite activities and objects that can be used to make a daily schedule or a communication board.

The TaDoodles Washable All-in-One Paints may be great for those children with autism who have difficulty holding regular crayons. These paints allow the child to hold the paint tool with their entire hand. This toy will allow children with autism to express themselves artistically.

My First Story Reader is a great toy to introduce children with autism to reading and reading comprehension. Autistic children often struggle with reading comprehension, but early intervention with such toys may help.
