On April 30th, 2010 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released information about a voluntary recall of several children's medicines.
The McNeil Consumer Healthcare Announces Voluntary Recall of Certain OTC Infants’ and Children’s Products press release states that the medicines in question are all children's products, not yet expired, and distributed in the following countries: United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, Dubai (UAE), Fiji, Guam, Guatemala, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, and Kuwait.
Reportedly, no adverse medical issues related to these medicines have been documented but "McNeil Consumer Healthcare is initiating this voluntary recall because some of these products may not meet required quality standards" (souce).
The full list of recalled products is outlined in the FDA/McNeil Consumer Healthcare press release.
Austin parents should take extra precaution as the local allergy counts have been unusually high this year and two of the recalled products are popular children's allergy medicines. Molds and Grasses have been particulalry high this year both locally and across the nation.
Children's Zyrtec and one formula of children's Benadryl are on the recall list.
Consumers are advised to stop using any of the products on the recall list immediately and contact your doctor, pharmacist, or care provider for alternative treatments. There is no mention in the press release of any refunds, only a hotline to answer questions: 1-888-222-6036 and also at www.mcneilproductrecall.com.
