Have you ever wondered how to get pre-school to school-age children involved in volunteering in the community? Little Helpings Hands provides opportunities to do that very thing. One of the February projects from Little Helping Hands is a group effort to volunteer at the Special Olympics Winter Games.

Little Helping Hands has committed to find volunteers to help with the bowling activity on Saturday February 6th; there are 2 spots still open to join their group from 11 am-1 pm that day. The hands-on volunteering for this event is limited to children 8-14 years old. Younger children are encouraged to participate by cheering from the stands.

Marissa Vogel is the service-motivated source behind Little Helping Hands, an "organization [that] was created to give you and your children the opportunity to not only give back to our community, but to help build a tradition of volunteering within your family"(source).

When asked how Little Helpings Hands became involved with the Special Olympics, Vogel gave some insight into how projects evolve into volunteer opportunities for families. "Our Board President has volunteered in the past for these games with her husband and suggested that this would be a great volunteer opportunity for families and children", Vogel says. "We often don't get direct opportunities to work with those in need so we decided this was a good opportunity not only to help and support a great cause, but for children to get a better understanding of other children and adults with disabilities".

Vogel wants to remind the community that the Special Olympics relies on volunteers to help staff the Winter Games. Vogel registered a Little Helping Hands group to help via the Special Olympics of Texas website. This will be the first year for Little Helping Hands to be involved with he Special Olympics Winter Games.

To join the Little Helping Hands group and volunteer with other families at the Special Olympics or to hear about future volunteer opportunities, contact Marissa Vogel at marissa@littlehelpinghands.org or 512.358.6943.

According the Special Olympics Texas website, "more than 2,100 Special Olympics Texas athletes from across the state are making plans to fill the Austin area for the 2010 Winter Games…The Games are declared open at Opening Ceremonies on Thursday, February 4 at the Travis County Exposition Center at 6:30 p.m.".

The athletic activities start on Friday February 5th and end on Sunday February 7th. Volunteer registration for the event is still open through Texas Special Olympics (you don't have to go through Little Helping Hands to volunteer!). All events are free an open to the public. Activities include bowling, volleyball, power lifting, figure skating and table tennis.
