
Mayor Adrian Fenty was awarded the DC Jobs with Justice's first annual "Grinch of the Year" garnering 50% of the vote. DC Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee came in second with 25%, trailed closely by the Lerner Family, owners of the Washington Nationals, whose failure to pay rent to the DC government on their new tax-payer funded stadium earned them 22% of the vote.
"Fenty has certainly had a busy year," said Mackenzie Baris of DC Jobs with Justice. "Closing the city's last downtown homeless shelter, privatizing city services, cutting money to programs for low-income people, selling off public land to developers, and busting public sector unions - it's really hard to pinpoint just one reason he so richly deserves this questionable honor."
For more than a decade, Jobs with Justice coalitions across the country have selected a "Grinch of the Year" as a way to recognize their hometown Grinches. Mayor Fenty will be receiving a "Certificate of Grinchy-nition' from DC JWJ. The National Jobs with Justice Grinch of the Year, Wall Street, out-polled union-buster Rick Berman and Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. Jobs with Justice, with chapters in 40 cities in 25 states, was founded in 1987 to support workers’ rights struggles as part of a larger campaign for economic and social justice.
