The Bike Lesson-a fun read for parents and kids

When I was a child, my favorite thing to do was to sit in our big, brown arm chair and pile up books all around me. I could sit for hours reading and looking at pictures. So, imagine my disappointment when my boys didn't take to reading as I had.

Reading is fundamental to learning, although finding good books that my children enjoy isn't always easy. Last night we rediscovered a gem.

The Berenstain Bears, The Bike Lesson, by Stan and Jan Berenstain is fun for parents and children. The copy I have happens to be the same one my Dad read to me. I remember him laughing out loud as we read about Father Bear and his attempts at teaching Brother Bear how to ride a bike. Kids love this book because Father Bear gets himself into all kinds of trouble, from riding off a cliff and landing in a tree, to forgetting his left hand from his right hand. And Brother Bear is the one who is there to help his father out of each new predicament. In the end Brother Bear gives Father Bear a ride home. Children love to hear Brother Bear say "Thank you Dad, now I see. That was a very good lesson for me, " throughout the story.

As I read The Bicycle Lesson to my boys we laughed and talked about what Father Bear was trying to teach Brother Bear. In the end they begged me to read the story again, and then my seven-year-old took the book and wanted to read it himself. He has Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and it is often hard to find a story that will keep his interest, especially while reading on his own. I think we've found one.

For more information: What is Sensory Processing Disorder, or SPD?
