U.S. 301, S.R. 100 improvements to begin

Improvements to the busy intersection of U.S. 301 and S.R. 100 in Starke are scheduled to begin July 6. The Florida DOT will host an open house to provide details on the project.

The open house is scheduled for Tuesday, June 29 at the Bradford County Public Library, 456 W. Pratt St., Starke. FDOT staff will be available to go over the plans and answer questions on the project from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will be no formal presentation, so people interested are encouraged to drop by anytime.

The improvements include widening the intersection to give large vehicles more room to complete a right turn onto and off of U.S. 301, as well as replacing the traffic signals with mast arms signals. Drainage structures in the area will be upgraded, and once the improvements have been made, the intersection will be resurfaced. All work will be done Sundays through Thursdays between 8:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. due to the volume of traffic.

More than 28,500 vehicles travel each day on U.S. 301 and of those, 21 percent are classified as heavy-duty trucks. More than 10,300 vehicles travel each day on S.R. 100 with 14 percent classified as heavy-duty.

The project is estimated to take about three months to complete, and Semper Fi Services, Inc. of Palmetto has been hired by FDOT to do the work at a cost of $465,487.92.
