Scientists have announced that the LCROSS space probe uncovered water on the Moon when it crashed into the Cabeus crater at the lunar south pole over a months ago. Analysis of the vapor plume and the ejecta curtain caused by the LCROSS impact show significant presence of water. In effect, the theory that water ice exists in the permanently shadowed craters at the lunar poles has firm evidence to support it.
Scientists caution that more analysis is forthcoming on the data returned from LCROSS. They hint at other substances that were ejected upwards when LCROSS impacted on the lunar surface.
Advocates of space settlements suggest that the presence of water on the Moon will make the eventual colonization of the Moon much easier. Water is not only suitable for drinking, but also can be split into hydrogen and oxygen and used at rocket fuel.
