Joining ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ and the upcoming ‘When Worlds Collide’, a remake of the 1950s classic ‘Forbidden Planet’ is now in the works. Ordinarily this news would be the cause of some trepidation. Fortunately Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski is doing the screenplay, so there is good hope of something of quality being made.
According to the SyFy Channel, J. Michael Straczynski has promised to be true to the original story, but with a little more back story and action added on.
The original ‘Forbidden Planet’, based on Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, is the story of a star ship and her crew contacting the last survivors of a previous ship, a scientist and his daughter, as well as a robot. They uncover a mystery surrounding a dead civilization on the alien planet which seemed to have destroyed itself in a rather creative manner. Intelligent dialogue, sexual tension, humor, and some action ensure. The original starred Leslie Nielson, Walter Pidgeon, and Ann Francis.
J. Michael Straczynski is well known for his own intelligent, well produced science fiction of which Babylon 5 is a prime example.
