Congressman Bart Gordon (D) of Tennessee has announced that he will retire from the Congress after the end of her current term. Bart Gordon is the Chairman of the House Science and Technology Committee that overseas, among other things, NASA and the US space program. Bart Gordon has been a strong advocate of NASA’s space exploration program.
Bart Gordon has announced that one of his top priorities in his last year in Congress will be to pass a new authorization bill for NASA. Work on that NASA bill has been delayed pending a decision by the Obama administration on the future direction of space exploration in the wake of the report of the Augustine Commission.
Bart Gordon is the fourth Democratic Congressman to announce retirement. Bart Gordon is considered a blue dog Democrat and voted against the House version of health care reform. Many analysts believe that Democrat retirements from Congress stem from a fear of losing reelection in 2010. Bart Gordon represents a majority Republican district in Tennessee.
