After two months of imprisonment and awaiting trial, 11 employees of the mayor of Caracas were released from jail on Thursday.
According to Univision.com, the group was arrested on disorderly conduct charges on Aug. 26 while marching to the Supreme Court of Venezuela. They planned to protest a bill passed by lawmakers allied with President Hugo Chávez that would negatively affect their job security.
“Everyone joined in the struggle for our freedom,” said Carlos Javier Losada, one of 11 released. Losada said after his release he would dedicate his time to press for no other political prisoners in Venezuela. “I will not rest until you have full freedom in my country,” he said.
Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma, who was present at the time of release, said that Chávez has the chance to redeem himself before the country, and urged him to ensure “that Venezuela has a Christmas without political prisoners,” according to El Universal.
It is still unclear how or why the mayor’s 11 employees were released.
