The head of the Paraguayan Congress, Sen. Miguel Carrizosa, accused Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez of “interference in internal affairs” on Monday.
From the Bolivian city of Cochabamba, Chávez said Paraguay’s “extreme right” was preparing for a coup against President Fernando Lugo, according to Los Tiempos.
Paraguay recently accused Bolivia of purposely hiding the details of its recent purchase of six fighter jets. Chávez claims the alleged coup-plotters are using this “attack” on Bolivia as an excuse to plan Lugo’s ouster.
At a press conference, Carrizosa was upset, saying “it was our Executive Branch that denounced the arms race in the region, and not Congress.”
"We reject and find offensive [Chávez’s] comments regarding a far-right coup against the President. Furthermore, in accordance with the constitution, we have democratic tool to judge, if necessary, the president: impeachment," he said.
Chávez has often and loudly criticized other countries—particularly the U.S. and Colombia—for interfering in its sovereign affairs. However, he frequently makes public comments regarding the politics of his Latin American neighbors.
There are currently no independent media or government reports indicating that a far-right contingent in Paraguay is actually planning a coup against Lugo.
