ComScore, an Internet marketing research company, released a recent report on the Twitter.com growth worldwide. The number of visitors globally to the social network was 93 million for the month of June with an increase of 109 percent compared to the previous year. The countries with the highest penetration were Indonesia with 20.8 percent followed by Brazil with 20.5 and Venezuela with 19 percent.

All of the data compiled by ComScore was for the month of June alone and compared that same month a year later. Twitter is continuing to rival Facebook with steady number of users on its network. Out of the three countries mentioned one made a significant surge on social media marketing was Venezuela. In large part it was due to President Hugo Chavez joining the network in late April to counter the opposition to his socialist project on the country.

The two regions that predominantly have grown to embrace social media are Latin American and Asia Pacific. The number of unique visitors jumped to 305 percent in Latin America and Asia Pacific was the second fastest region with 243 percent to adopt Twitter.

According to ComScore, in June 2009 Latin America had 3,792,000 unique visitors. One year later, that number increased three times to 15,377,000. Now for the Asia Pacific regions in 2009 7,324,000 visited Twitter and for 2010 grew almost four times to 25,121,000.

In the press release vice president of ComScore emphasized how Twitter has transformed communications around the globe and how ubiquitous it has become.

“Twitter.com has experienced an explosion in global traffic over the past year, establishing itself as one of the most-visited social networking sites across each of the five worldwide regions,” said Graham Mudd, comScore vice president, search & media. “Today nearly 3 out of 4 global Internet users access social networking sites each month, making it one of the most ubiquitous activities across the web. As more users around the world have become acquainted with connecting and expressing themselves through social media, it has created an environment where new media like Twitter can emerge globally in a relatively short period of time.”
