U.S. President Obama likely a no-show for 2010 Olympic opening ceremonies

Previously it was rumoured that U.S. President Obama would attend the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, now it seems this may not be the case according to recent news reports that Obama may be a no show.

Obama is not alone; presidents and prime minister of other countries around the globe are sending representatives as well

One wonders in a global terrorist fearing society, if governments are hesitant to allow their leaders to witness a spectacular winter event witnessed every four years.  Perhaps the attempted bombing by an Islamic extremist during the Christmas holidays over U.S. soil and the recent admission of Bin Laden being complicit in all this may have the U.S. uneasy at the moment.   Security concerns over our city so close to the Pacific Ocean and hundreds of isolated islands and inlets may well clinch the deal as well, when months before the Olympics in October 2009, a shipload  of illegal  Tamil refugees, some suspected as Tamil terrorist came overseas to Canada seemingly unnoticed until within our ocean borders limits.

British Columbia may not instill a lot of confidence in world leaders, as British Columbia politics has shown it is not big on law and order in protecting its citizens or elected leaders, yet alone world leaders.

There is a reason why Canada’s MacLean’s magazine touted British Columba as a World Criminal Superpower, proving once again that Vancouver and the surrounding cities have always been a desired haven for all sorts of criminal activity, with the most lenient provincial revolving door justice system on the planet.   Could this just be one more nail in our Olympic coffin as the Best place to live on earth?  Some think so, as is the additional threat of many anti Olympic protests slated during the games. Anyone looking to carry out any act either protest to terrorism could certainly take that opportunity to blend in with protestors or visitors as security may find it difficult to prove who is who until it is too late.

Certainly terrorism wins every time if a countries leader who used to enjoy in attending the Olympics as boosters of their countries Olympic athletes in the past may be reluctant to attend Olympic games in the chance of being a terrorist target, which may result in not just their safety, but the safety of others attending the same event.

Terrorists on the other hand would relish the chance to collectively blow up all their Western Eggs in one basket, thus saving the effort of doing it one at a time in other to promote their platform globally, which would result in worldwide panic and economic uncertainty.

All the security measures money can buy will not stop any terrorist bent on killing himself in completing his mission, even if it means killing fellow innocent Muslims at any public event, as history has shown in the Middle East.  The White House Gala party crashers are an example that complacency in security has human failings we all share as a society, extrapolated ten- fold when some may be caught up in the Olympic moment instead of the security task at hand.

Sad, but true, as Bob Dylan once sang, “The times they are a changing” and Canadian society is no exception.

Obama has essentially validated, if only tacitly, the left's version of the Jihadist war with the West. If nothing else, he has not really repudiated the idea that the Jihadist attacks are the result of our own meddling and, if not deserved, then certainly caused by us.

When a African-American president with a Muslim African father cannot attend the games out of fear of terrorism, then that means that no mere gesture, no change in apparent attitude, no willingness to make amends, will do.

At that point, the point of view of centrists and more conservative folk gets validated. This is actually a victory for our side, thought it will go largely unheralded.

Security at seaport with several islands offshore is probably a concern for Obama not attending. I would think that it's also political, after a swift kick in the butt from the people in MA, and a reminder that "it's the economy stupid" chances are that President Obama doesn't want to be seen hob knobbing with a guy that prorogued parliament to see the Olympics. Another well written article Barry.

Thanks for this post , Barry, well done. I would say that I cannot add anything to Roy's astute remarks , but to second them.

I visit Vancouver regularly and its a beautiful city, just too colorful for my taste. No wonder you have a gang problem,Canada lets just about anyone in. We could not believe you allowed all those illegal Tamils in your country, cause here in Washington state we would have set them adrift in their boat back to Tamiland!

One would figure that Mr. Harper is at least attending the opening, if not then this whole thing looks a bit rotten.

The Olympics are nothing but a moneypit which will put BC'ers in hock for decades to come. Did anyone not learn from the Montreal 76 Olympics. They just recently paid of that money pit after 35 years.

Many are leaving Vancouver because of the high crime rates and those who leave Vancouver during the Olympics are frustrated with all the rules of the road and high security. It will be nice once things get back to normal.

There is no democracy in Israel as a state is illegitimate and illegal and not recognized
Evidence of this if anyone wanted to write a comment in the Israeli websites
Does not allow him or be there are many obstacles to prevent him from writing a comment The reasons for Arab-Israeli conflict is the occupation of Palestine in 1948.
Palestine Arab Islamic state like the rest of the Arab and Islamic states surrounding
Them. Means that there are Jews and Zionists in Palestine a big mistake, because this entity
Zionist is not consistent with the surrounding area (such as language, customs, traditions and religion)
The only solution to end the Arab-Israeli conflict is the expulsion of Jews from Palestine
All of Palestine. The Jewish people will not rest and will not feel comfortable and stability
But if it gets out of Palestine and the Middle East completely. If people continue to
Jews in Palestine and the Middle East, the death and destruction will continue.
Palestine Arab Islamic state and will remain
