The recent media frenzy over affirmative action in hiring policies by the federal government has political parties of all stripes in an uproars. Though affirmative action has been lambasted for decades by many Canadians, many Canadians remained silent for fear of appearing un-politically correct.
It seems the federal government has a sliding scale of criteria when it comes to hiring minorities, with some minorities more equal then others.
Many believe this once Liberal implemented ideal and modified by the succeeding Conservative government was yet just another effort by a majority of old lily white politicians to appease minority voters to showcase diversity in the workplace and ensure pockets a minorities were employed in strategic areas in an effort to cover all their politically correct bases come election time.
Reports by civil servants that government minions needed to fill minority quotas as the number 1 priority regardless if the minority had experience to do the job.
One unemployed Canadian applying for a government job took the federal government to task. Sara Landriault of Kemptville, Ontario, applied for a Citizenship and Immigration Canada position only to be told she was not being considered because she was not a minority.
Incensed, Ms. Landriault did the unthinkable, she went to the media, resulting in a political hotbed among political parties both Liberals and New Democrats wishing to maintain the status quo as the Conservatives revisit this obvious discriminatory practice of Race versus experience or ability to do the job.
In the 1970s through to the 1990s women were said to be the minority in senior positions in the Federal Public service, including old fat bald white politicians stating they needed more women members of parliament, not because they liked women, but more so to get women voters on board to vote for women political candidate to boost party numbers come election time, thereby covering all their political bases. Political posturing in the media and the house of commons soon began with political parties trying to outdo each other in actively recruiting potential women politicians to run for their party.
The Federal Public Service were instructed to get women into senior mandarin positions pronto, with positions it seems being created to give the impression of everything is A-OK. The federal commission on the status of women is one political department developed to appease the female voters, leaving the impression the female race is a minority. Yet, women everywhere, much like all minorities shout to the rooftops "Treat me as an equal, do not lead, for I will not follow, walk beside me as an equal".
Perhaps if Sara, work experience aside, were another colour, handicapped, could not speak any of our official languages, a senior citizen, lesbian, single mother and a smoker, Sara would be at the top of the list and eligible for any Ministerial portfolio in the Federal government's quest to cover their politically correct minority diversity bases.
So in ending, Canada in which all are said to be equal, shows a sliding scale of equality when it comes to minorities, with woman at the top of the list.
Maybe it is time to do away with political correctness gone awry and hire those best for the job, after all, taxpayers deserve better, not political parties self serving agendas. Last time I checked, the only race that mattered was the human race.
Below shows the Federal Governments hiring policy in their sliding scale of minority hypocrisy of not all minorities are equal.
"The Public Service of Canada is committed to building a skilled, diverse workforce reflective of Canadian society. As a result, it promotes employment equity and encourages candidates to indicate voluntarily on their application if they are a woman, an Aboriginal person, a person with a disability or a member of a visible minority group".

Amen to that. Here's to the Human Race. Let's do away with reverse discrimination and political correctness. It's about time that we hired based on ability and training....NOT "MINORITY".................of any kind! It's not doing anyone any favors.
My husband a BCIT grad with 3 years experience in planning applied to the City of Richmond, BC for a
entry level position he was more than qualified only to be told it was open to minorities only. Funny thing is my husband is white and Richmond's population has a Asian majority. Apparently the City of Richmond Human Resource officer who was Asian didn't like that fact pointed out to her.
