What do cutting-edge geeks who attend SXSW think about the future? I got a snapshot via my hefty SXSW Interactive Program Book which reveals the Registrant Survey Results. While there were few true surprises -- except for the fact that a mere 8% would prefer to live in a space colony --the survey does provide an eclectic and intriguing look at the SXSWi psychographic. If I was a sponsor, I'd be all over this geekfest ---and in fact, they are. (More on this later)
Some SXSW consumer insights:
We love to work: (as I said - few surprises!)
Only 19% said they don't work at all on the weekend
38% work 3 hours
25% work 6 hours
9% work 9 hours
9% work 10+ hours on the weekend
We're entrepreneurial:
10% plan to start a new technology-related company in 2010 (and it will be their first)
23% -- and it will add to their portfolio
67% won't -- clearly they're slackers who are NOT from the Bay Area
And oh yeah, we're entrepreneurial:
48% say they have created at least one technology-created business
The red, white and blue rocks technology:
80% think the next breakthrough technology will be developed in the US
(The rest undoubtedly think it will be invented on that space colony or maybe in the wreck of Oceanic 815)
We're optimistic:
96% say they are generally optimistic about the tech economy in 2010.
(The other 4% may be found at Lucky Lounge on 5th Street.)
Guru's Note: My face part of the SXSW published survey is Hugh Macleod's tell-it-like-it-is art: "I was complaining about SXSW going mainstream seventeen years before it went mainstream. yeah, baby that's how cool I am, seriously."
