In the coming weeks and months, we're sure to be inundated with volumes of “the best Twitter lists to follow”. In anticipation of this great and massive flood, a few of the more technologically and social media-centric lists would be best to pick up now before drowning.
To find some of the better Twitter lists out there, the best course of action is to locate those “movers and shakers” and those lists that showcase some of the experts in their fields within the confines of web technology and social media.
In the web tech arena, Pete Cashmore, Tim O'Reilly and Robert Scoble can't be beat. Pete of Mashable fame offers the Mashable list – the members of the Mashable team. On the O'Reilly Technews list 39 of the crème de le crème in web technology can be found. Tim also has created Twitter lists that cover data visualization, events, ebooks and more. Robert Scoble has got this list thing down pat. With a dozen or so lists created, Robert covers just about every aspect of web technology one could imagine. Some of the more followed lists are tech-news-brands and most-influential-in-tech.
When it comes to social media, there really are just too many active social media experts on Twitter to be able to effectively narrow down a particular overall guru or gurus. Instead, a check for lists that highlight and list social media experts is warranted. Some of the best ones available now are social-media-smarties (those folks who “get” social media), social-media-links (those who are the curators of social media links), and digital-and-social-media (a listing of those who offer fantastic content but aren't always the most popular).
It's a pretty safe bet that the number of "top Twitter lists" will grow at an astronomical pace. The trick down the road will be to figure out which ones really have something to offer and which are simply the equivalent of a popularity contest.
