A devastating earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.3, hit the country of Haiti on Tuesday. There will likely be thousands of casualties and many buildings, including a hospital, have collapsed. Thousands of people are injured and medical help is scarce. Twitter and Facebook users are helping to spread the word about the donations that are needed for the already poverty-stricken country of Haiti.
Musician Wyclef Jean has been reaching out to people via his Twitter account to ask for help for the people of Haiti. In 2005, Jean established the Yéle Haiti Foundation. In its first year of operation, the foundation, with funding by Comcel, provided scholarships to 3,600 children in Gonaïves, Haiti, after the devastation by Hurricane Jeanne.
On his blog, Wyclef Jean posted a message about help for Haiti:
Many people have already reached out to see what they can do right now. We are asking those interested to please do one of two things: Either you can use your cell phone to text “Yele” to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill), or you can visit Yele.org and click on DONATE.
In addition, The American Red Cross has earmarked $200,000 for the disaster in Haiti but there is more money needed for relief efforts.
The Red Cross is using their Twitter account to ask for donations: You can text "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
In addition, you can make a donation right on the Red Cross website and find keep up with the American Red Cross' efforts in Haiti on their Facebook page.
